Abstract PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, 2ND EDITION CD-ROM VERSION by Daniel M. Albert, MD, MS, Frederick A. Jakobiec, MD, DSc (Med) $950 ($1500 for multiple users) Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Co; 2000. ACD-ROM version of a textbook should be a very different creature than the original work. It must be much more than just a digital transcription of the words and illustrations from paper to electronic media. To be successful, it should take full advantage of the search capabilities of a browser, the access to the Web and electronic databases, word processing, and image editing.

AU this is dependent upon the talents of the information technology team that transforms the medical text into the new media. However, if the final outcome is to be successful and not simply technological fireworks, the text itself must stand on its own. On all these fronts the second edition of Albert and Jakobiec's Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology; CDROM Version has succeeded in a very impressive way. The first edition of the work was one of the heirs to Duke-Elder's Textbook and System from the early and mid-20th century.

It was very successful as a 6volume set and won the coveted first prize in Medical Sciences from the Association of American Publishers. This resulted in the updated and significantly revised second edition. It is an all-encompassing and encyclopedic work that aims to collect all relevant ophthalmic knowledge and divide it into basic science and clinical areas. With 8169 ills (3105 in RdI color), hundreds of contributors, and 422 chapters (over 100 new ones), it comes very close to achieving all of its original goals. Some of the new areas covered in this edition include the genetics of inherited retinal disease, neoangiogenesis, treatment of macular holes, retinitis, and endophthalmitis; genetics and therapy of glaucoma; treatment of retinoblastoma; diagnostic immunohistochemical staining; refractive surgery techniques; and cosmetic surgery.

While it is impossible to comment on specific chapters, it must be noted that the quality of the writing and depth of knowledge is very even throughout the work. This is usually difficult to achieve in a multiauthor textbook where some chapters may be of very different quality than others.

For this to occur, a strong editorial hand at the helm is necessary. The CD-ROM version was very easy to install on a Pentium II PC with 64 MBs of RAM. For the fastest access it should be installed on the hard drive. A browser is required, and they recommend a later version of Netscape Navigator (which is provided on the CD for installation). Since I use a hospital network computer and cannot use Netscape, I had to use Internet Explorer to review the book. Although one is warned that Java script errors can occur in this setting, I had no problems accessing the data and performing higher level tasks.

In fact, browsing was a pleasure because of several clever functions incorporated into the design. There is a global interface bar that allows access to the book's main features. This includes the main book title and contents, results of searches, and a document button that moves among chapters or chapter segments. There is a 'favorites' button that allows the reader to bookmark any text or illustration that may be needed later. A 'note' function works like little yellow stickers that can be placed anywhere in the text to make personal comments. There is also an easy to use help function.

A great feature is the 'abstract' button found on many of the references throughout the book. Clicking on them allows the browser to go to the PubMed website and show. There is also an easy to use help function. A great feature is the 'abstract' button found on many of the references throughout the book. Clicking on them allows the browser to go to the PubMed website and show the entire abstract. Obviously this needs Web access, but I found it very useful when I was trying to find references on a particular subject.

The entire text is available to print or to copy and paste into word processing documents. The illustrations are of good resolution and it is possible to adjust the contrast directly on the screen with the special button provided. Only the 'Go on line' function is not particularly necessary since it is simply a link to the publishers web-site and on-line store. In all respects Albert and Jakobiec's Principles and Practice of Ophthalmobgy, CD-ROM Version delivers what it promises. It is an extensive repository of ophthalmic knowledge that can help ophthalmologists (and other physicians) find information about most diseases, treatments, and previous bibliography. As with all encyclopedias it is not necessarily the latest information, but the base from which to start a search. The CD-ROM version makes the information imminendy accessible, easy to navigate and fun to use.
